Just a casual afternoon at the coffee shop, and still she looks stunningly gorgeous and beautiful. (Did I mention lovely?)  ;D

"maireadcarlinsings Sometimes you need to take yourself out of the venue and get yourself to a coffee shop for chill times with your friend. @eabha101

The Other Ladies in Celtic Woman / Orla's Celtic Celebration
« on: March 05, 2016, 12:22:30 AM »
Orla Fallon | Celtic Celebration | Forum Performing Arts Theater | Binghamton, NY | March 4, 2016

Last of the Original Five
After meeting Meav, Alex, and Eabha and seeing them perform live for the first time all in the same year, I figured that there was no way 2016 could possibly top 2015 for CW thrills. But it's off to a pretty good start. Several months ago I was amazed to see a posting on Facebook that Orla was coming to Binghamton, NY to perform with her band - just a 2.5 hour drive from me. I was online the moment they went on sale, and secured a front-row seat.

Orla was the last of the "Original Five" that I hadn't seen perform in person, and tonight I crossed yet another item off my bucket list in spectacular fashion. What a tremendous show she and her three-piece band put on for a mostly sold-out crowd. Just from a random sampling of conversations I was a part of or overheard, people came from all parts of the country to see Orla perform. She is still beloved, and for good reason.

A Celebration of Song
Right out of the gate, the first number was the irresistibly catchy "Ni Na La" from her "My Land" CD, a song that stays with you, grabs hold of you and won't let you go. From there, there was a little bit of something for everyone. For the Celtic Woman fans, there were songs like "Spanish Lady," "Isle of Innisfree," and "Carrickfergus." Classic and traditional tunes such as "My Love is Like a Red Rose," "In the Sweet By and By," "Tennessee Waltz," "Five Hundred Miles," and a medley of lullabies. Gaelic tunes like "Nead Na Lachan," and "An Mhaighdean Mhara," and even "a song about mashed potatoes" called "Colcannon." Also some tear-jerkers like "Distant Shore," "Simple Love," and "Red is the Rose." And that's not even the entire setlist. Though it was called "Celtic Celebration," it really was just a remarkable celebration of all kinds of great music. There was Celtic, there was country, there was pop, there was traditional, there was folk, and even a New Orleans jazz-ish take on the familiar "Hard Times."

Her band was very talented, with a piano player, guitarist, and fiddle player, the latter two of which added vocal backing as well. Their obvious joy of performing really shone through, and everyone had a great time. Orla said she wanted it to be like a night where the family just gathered in the kitchen playing tunes, and that's certainly what it felt like. I was struck by how all the folks in the audience walking out were smiling from ear to ear. Just a great time, feel-good sort of concert.

Meet Me in the Lobby
After calling her out for a solo encore, Orla thanked us and said "I hope to meet you all in the lobby." And she wasn't kidding. Sure enough, by the time the aisles cleared and I was able to make my way to the lobby, there she was, already greeting a snaking line of fans. I was one of dozens and dozens of people who stood in the line to get a word with her. Many asked for photos and autographs, but all I really wanted was to tell her how much her music had touched me, and one song in particular that blew me away.

The way she described her granddad in the introduction to the song nearly knocked me out of my seat, because she used exactly the same words that I use to describe what my Mom meant to me - especially the phrase "unconditional love."  I wanted to tell her that, and also that every time I heard the song, I would think of my Mom. She was so kind and gracious. She actually told me that she would think of my Mom, too, whenever she sung it. She even asked my Mom's name so she could remember. What a sweet lady. It's a moment I'll never forget.

All in all, she stayed for more than an hour - after performing for nearly two hours on stage - and greeted every single person who was in line. After meeting her I just stood by the door, watching in amazement as one by one, she cheerfully took time with everyone to chat and sign a CD or a program, or take a picture.

I've said it before, and I'll keep saying it - I am amazed at how Celtic Woman over the years has managed without fail to find brilliantly talented performers who are even better people.

A little "thank you" to Europe that the ladies posted on their Facebook page.

Seems hard to believe that just one month from yesterday, I'll be at my first show of the year. Fans in the southern portion of the country will get to see them even sooner - but I can't complain, I was able to attend the first show of the X Anniversary Tour last year in Syracuse, which was unforgettable.  8)

Another lovely post-show picture. Hmmm, we will have to be extra loud when she comes to the states so we can win back the title of her "favorite show ever." Challenge accepted!

I'd go as far as to say tonight was possibly my favourite show ever. Thank you so much #mannheim I won't forget you in a hurry xx
